Hip-Hop The Most Influential Music Genre

Kanye West. Happy, and one of the most influential.

That’s right, you read that correctly. A recent study finds that Hip-Hop has been the most influential music genre since the 60’s, beating out the British Invasion (Rolling Stones, The Beatles) soul, punk, and a slew of other genres.

In the study conducted by Queen Mary and Imperial College London, researchers wanted to objectively figure out the most important development in popular music. To figure this out, they used music recognition technology to analyze thousands of songs on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 between 1960 – 2010. They then broke down each song into various topics. In collaboration with Last.fm, they studied the rise and fall of each genres popularity within those topics.

Although many people complain that pop music has gotten more and more samey, diversity actually increased in the ’80s and ’90s as hip-hop emerged and flourished. The researchers said they found “no evidence for the progressive homogenization of music in the charts.”

The researchers found that the three major “revolutions” in American pop music were rock and roll, new wave circa, and hip hop. With the conclusion of this study, it can be gathered that yes, Kanye West is indeed the best.
