Mez Mariye, formerly known as VITAL will be taking the stage at our fifth annual Alley showcase this Friday at Studio Bar, but this time with a new artist name and new sound. O.L staff thought it was the perfect opportunity to be nosey and look into the reasoning behind the name change.
Mariye told us,
“Although I still respond to Vital here and there, I felt like it was time to break out into a whole new person. I’m growing as an artist and as a human being. I’m experiencing new things in my life that inspire me in different ways. I needed to rebrand my whole approach before I decided to release new material and I needed a name to go with it. Something more original than VITAL, so I could break apart from other similar google searches.
“Mez” is short for my middle name Mezgebu, which is also my fathers name. It means, “book of records” in the Ethiopian Bible. Mariye is another piece of my full name which means my honey or love.
Together I felt like it had something special. Something very original. Now the name is one part of an artists brand, the music is more crucial in my opinion. I’m confident in the music I’m about to put out, this time around as Mez Mariye.”
Mariye later vouched for why people should come see him at the alley this Friday,
“You should be there because The Alley has proven itself 4 times in a row! I’m just another performer who wants to turn shit up and bring you a better performance than ever before.”
